Plainfield mayor Adrian I. Mapp  endorses Baraka for governor
New Jersey Globe --Published by By David Wildstein, March 19 2025 9:24 pm

Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp today endorsed Ras Baraka, the three-term mayor of Newark, for the Democratic nomination for governor, saying he has witnessed “firsthand his courage and his vision for a better New Jersey.”

“Cities like Plainfield stand to benefit from a Baraka administration like never before,” said Mapp. Governor Baraka would be an inspirational fighter against the Trump agenda that targets marginalized and vulnerable communities, and Ras is fully prepared to defend our residents from an agenda that bolsters the ultra-wealthy and corporate interests that do not have their best interests at heart.”

Mapp’s endorsement came just before Union County Democrats voted to endorse Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) for governor. Mapp said he would still run with the county organization slogan in his bid for re-election to a fourth term in the June 10 Democratic primary.

“A Ras Baraka administration would be a stark contrast to the current Trump administration,” said Mapp. “Unlike Trump, Ras has the working class at the forefront of his mind, he is going to fight every day for a more equitable, more just, and more affordable New Jersey for all residents.”

Murphy names Amelia Mapp to Cannabis Regulatory Commission

Gov. Phil Murphy will nominate Amelia Mapp, an executive with a biopharmaceutic company and the wife of Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp, to serve as a commissioner of the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.

Mapp will replace Charles Barker, one of the original commissioners, who is stepping down.  This is the first change to the original commission, which was formed after voters approved the legalization of adult-use recreational marijuana in a 2020 referendum.

“The Governor thanks Commissioner Barker for his service on the Cannabis Regulatory Commission over the past three and a half years and for his work establishing an equitable adult-use cannabis market in New Jersey, with social justice at the forefront,” said Natalie Hamilton, a spokesperson for Murphy.  “We look forward to Commissioner-designate Amelia Mapp continuing to build upon this important work on the Commission.”

Mapp must be confirmed by the State Senate.

If confirmed, Mapp will join a five-member panel that regulates the state’s relatively new and burgeoning legal cannabis industry.

PLAINFIELD - Mayor Adrian Mapp envisions a city with expanded technology infrastructure and green initiatives while exploring new investments to attract more talent and innovation.

Mapp delivered his vision during his 2024 State of the City address, "The City of Tomorrow, Today," on Thursday at Charles and Anna Booker Elementary School.

Mapp, in his 11th year as mayor, said he sees a city where children are surrounded by cutting-edge technology, clean air, environmentally conscious spaces, world-class infrastructure and vibrant recreational facilities.

The mayor said Plainfield is working toward the development of a fiber optic infrastructure to support hyper-fast internet and the city's connectivity for the next 30 to 50 years, as well providing free WiFi in city parks, downtown gathering spots and municipal buildings.

Plainfield is also believed to be the first New Jersey community to offer AI-powered translation services at council meetings, he said.

Mapp noted major development projects have added more than 600 residential units and more than 300,000 square feet of commercial space to the city.
